River Front Times recently conducted an interview with Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett on the new Metallica album Death Magnetic. Kirk Hammett discussed the Death Magnetic solos, the discussion on the new Metallica album sound quality, and him playing a few minor characters for Metalocalypse.
Kirk Hammett on the guitar solos on Death Magnetic compared to the last Metallica album St. Anger solos:
“I think it goes without saying that the guitar solos were gonna be a given. There was no discussion. When we started writing, it was just like, ‘OK, time for a lead break here. Let’s go!’ There was no dialogue as to whether or not we would have guitar solos on this album. They would be back. Yeah.”

The canvas of a boxer, which is by celebrated artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, went under the hammer for $13.5 million. Christie’s says the price for “Untitled (Boxer)” exceeded the pre-auction estimate of more than $12 million.

An interesting interview with Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett in The Pitch about Metallica’s mindset and where Metallica stands in today’s heavy metal climate. The most interesting part is probably this one:
After the Napster backlash, how do you look back on Metallica’s attempt to fight downloading?
Metallica’s Kirk Hammett: “I’m still against file sharing. I still think people should respect the concept of intellectual property. I don’t have a problem with downloading that intellectual property once the people that deserve to be paid do get paid. Technology is a double-edged sword. It’s convenient and quick, but we pay a pretty high price for that convenience, that impatience. I would much rather be able to go out and buy a better-sounding CD than a shitty MP3. The whole e-mail and texting thing — I’m not sure if it’s really bringing us together as much as it’s isolating us. I kind of miss how people used to just call each other up.”

Metallica’s future with its record label, Warner Bros. Records, may not extend past the release of the latest album Death Magnetic. Edgar Bronfman Jr., CEO of the Warner Music Group, declined to comment on the status of contract negotiations with Metallica. The latest Metallica album, Death Magnetic, was the band’s last under its current contract with the label, which dates back to 1984 when Metallica first signed with Warner subsidiary Elektra Records.

As the financial markets skid wildly, some collectors are waging bets that art will be viewed as a safe haven. Among them is Lars Ulrich, a songwriter and the drummer for the heavy-metal band Metallica, who has consigned “Untitled (Boxer),” a 1982 painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat, for sale by Christie’s in New York next month. It is expected to bring from $12 million to $16 million according to The New York Times.
“Of course it’s an awkward time to sell, but I’ve always been about taking chances,” Metallica’s Lars Ulrich said.

Lars Ulrich has been doing some more promotional campaigning. None But My Own has posted a great interview.
NBMO: As of today I’ve heard the six ‘Death Magnetic’ songs you released on the web, what can I say man? I guess all I can say is ‘it’s good to see you again’.
Lars Ulrich: Thank you.
I’m sure you’re being bombarded by praise, so what I’m trying to say is enjoy it because I really feel it’s deserving.
You know what, my eyes are as open as they can be to everything and it’s been a pretty amazing Summer (laughs). So it’s awesome the way people are vibing on this music is pretty cool, it’s all kind of a blur because people keep asking me what I think of it. I’m standing in the middle of all of it going “I don’t know, I think I’m too close to it”, you know? Right now I’m kind of going mostly on what people tell me. We had this radio thing last night at HQ with Dave Grohl and a bunch of fan club members and it was kind of like one big giant love fest (laughs!). So yeah, a lot of people are saying some good things.
